Disk Inventory X, KDirStat, WinDirStat - GUI display of disk usage

The "original" program was KDirStat and clones for Windows (WinDirStat) and Mac OS X (Disk Inventory X) were made later on.

They are all disk usage utilities and show the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps".

re: windirstat

You should try Directory Report
No eye candy

Re: re: windirstat

Directory Report is Windows only and simply prints a directory listing recursively with a number of attributes for each row (one of the attributes/columns is size). It totally lacks any kind of GUI display with similiar advantages as the mentioned treemapping utilities.

re: Directory report

Directory Report is not a simple program

Directory Report Shows the following columns:
Directory size
Directory size with subdirectories
CRC32
Owner
DLL/Exe version
Plus it shows all the files belonging to the current directory

Double click on a directory and it automatically shows all its subdirectories and files
With the same extra columns
Thus you can quickly drill down to the areas taking up all your disk space

Re: Directory Report

Ok. I admit that it is a bit more complex than it seemed at first glance. You've listed at least two dozen features of this app, but failed to add the one that makes it comparable to the other treemapping utilities that I've listed in my original post. Namely: "shows the largest files/directories on your computer". Since the purpose of the treemapping utilities is to:
  • see how much space each type of data occupy
  • see what takes up the most space
But regardless of all these ... I'm a Mac + Linux user, so a Windows only utility will do no good for me. Anyway, thanks for the comment.
