Don't track me Google

Today Google decided to force Google Search users into enabling cookies for *.google.com domains. Previously you could prevent Google from tracking your search results (and still use Google's services) if you blocked cookies for google.com and allowed cookies for various Google services (accounts.google.com, plus.google.com, mail.google.com, etc.). But today Google search click tracking does not work anymore with google.com cookies blocked.

Google Translate bookmarklets to translate the current page into a selected language

The Google Translate site has a page with bookmarklets for all the supported languages. Just drag the bookmarklet link to your bookmarks toolbar, name it whatever you like and click it whenever you want to translate a page into the selected language. I always wanted something like this, but didn't know about this bookmarklet collection. Well done G. Smiling

Beware: deleting a folder in Picasa works recursively!

If you put pictures in a watched folder inside Picasa, then the folder will appear in the app's folder list the next time you start it. It'll show you the picture count behind the folder's name as it should. However what if you've other (sub-)folders in there too? Picasa shows only the top-level contents of a folder (when you select it in the folder list), ie. you don't see in a selected folder the pictures of it's sub-folders (these sub-folders appear in Picasa's folder list as separate items). However, the folder deletion process works recursively, ie. it'll delete all sub-folders (and all their content) too!

Google Software Updater just became compulsory?

Recently news was all full with the announcement of Google Earth 5. I was just about to update, when the installer popped up this silly question:
"Google Software Update is about to be installed.
(...)
a.) Quit Google Earth
b.) Accept and Install
How's that? Shocked Of course I instantly cancelled the install. Nobody should tell me to install any sneaky updater or go to hell. A bad move imho. See tha attached screenshot.

jQuery by Dmitri Gaskin

Dmitri Gaskin is a twelve year old boy, but his age should not fool you: he knows probably more about jQuery and Drupal than most of you. Smiling Here's a one hour presention of Dmitri talking about jQuery. He's of course far from a professional tutor (he's quite excited during the whole pres.), but you can clearly see that he has a lot of potential and is definitely a lot smarter than most developers (including me Smiling ). I was mostly playing my C64 (and doing some BASIC programming) at that age.

Google Mac Developer Playground

Think of this as a Mac-only "lab" of Google. Smiling All sorts of Mac projects are gathered here together and from time to time quite amazing stuff comes to light.

MacFUSE - a door to a new world of filesystems

MacFUSE is a native Mac implementation of FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace). It's core is developed quite differently from the original FUSE (on linux), but since it aims to be API-compliant with it's predecessor, a number of FUSE filesystems can be easily ported to MacFUSE.

However there're quite a lot original Mac ideas for new filesystems too. Eg. the Spotlight FS, the AccessibilityFS or GrabFS. You might want to check out YouTubeFS too.

Visigami - image searching made fancy

Visigami is a fancy UI for web searches, more specifically image searches. It allows one to dig into Google Image search, Picasa Web Albums and Flickr at the same time. The results are rendered in a fan, carousel or a grid and are animated as well. You can even use the app as a screen saver. Smiling

Top Draw - another "game of life"?

Top Draw is an "image generator": it creates images following some basic rules defined in a small snippet of JavaScript. My first throught about it was Conway's game of life. Smiling
