You might get into a situation where you've to run a webapp on IIS7 (or newer), but it was written for an older IIS version (eg. IIS 6). It's possible that you'll face the dreaded "An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode" error message. To solve this, you've to change the active pipeline mode for your webapp which can be set either globally or for an application/website.

"Microsoft Network Monitor is a packet analyzer. It enables capturing, viewing, and analyzing network data and deciphering network protocols. It can be used to troubleshoot network problems and applications on the network."

The de facto standard for network capture and analysis is Wireshark, but Microsoft also developed their solution for the problem and named it simply Network Monitor. The app has no real homepage, only a small knowledge base article. Most of the available information is gathered on Wikipedia and the app's blog.

I wonder how many years have to pass for Microsoft to release a Windows that really works? XP sucked, but eventually SP2 fixed most major problems and it became a quite usable OS. My first experience with Vista resulted in a crash after a few minutes of testing (and it was the final released version). Today I installed Windows 7 Ultimate Ed. in a virtual machine just to see how it is and the first execution of Windows Update resulted in an error (4 updates were to be installed and 1 failed ... the Hungarian language pack of course). Then Windows told me that it needed a restart and I agreed. Unfortunately the restart resulted in an error too ... allegedly Windows Update did not let the restart proceed. What an irony.

Fiddler is one of the few good software from Microsoft that I know (actually I don't remember whether this was an MS project right from the start or did they just simply buy out the developer company). It works only on Windows and recent versions require .NET, but it's nothing one cannot live with. It is feature rich, supports a lot of views of HTTP sessions, supports various methods for HTTPS traffic capturing, etc. This is one of the best HTTP debugging tools for use on the Windows platform.

CyberSnare is an essay explaining how Microsoft keeps you in the dark and misinformed about how an OS should work, and why are you better off looking for a replacement. It's mostly amusing to read, but unfortunately quite close to the truth. The problem with it is that if you're a pro-Microsoft activist, you'll certainly not read it ... if you're an MS-hater, then you already know all about the topic. So the target audience might be folks who are not quite satisfied with MS products, but have not yet spent time to take a look at competitive solutions.

I just faced the issue that our company templates do not render correctly in OpenOffice on Ubuntu, because the Tahoma font is not installed. It was part of the msttcorefonts package, but was removed, because Microsoft distributes only the regular variant in their free to use font package and the bold and italic variants are missing. The maintainers of msttcorefonts decided that including only the regular version of Tahoma causes more trouble, than it fixes ... therefore they removed the support for Tahoma. However you can still have it by manually installing the font as described here.

[HWSW] A Windows Vista egyszerűen kizárja azokat a felhasználókat, akik nem legálisan jutottak a termékhez -- közölte a Microsoft. Az operációs rendszer telepítése után 30 nap áll rendelkezésre az aktivációhoz, aki ezt nem teszi meg, csak korlátozott képességekkel használhatja a szoftvert, kizárólag a webböngészőt futtathatja, és azt is csupán egy óráig, ezt követően a Vista automatikusan kijelentkezteti a felhasználót.

A remondiak elsőként a Windows XP-ben vezettek be intézkedéseket a szoftvert illegálisan használók ellen. A Windows Genuine Advantege kezdeményezés egyrészt ingyenes szoftverekhez juttatta a legális felhasználókat, másrészt lehetetlenné tette frissítések, extrák (pl. DirectX, Media Player 11, Internet Explorer 7) letöltését a kalózváltozatokhoz, egyedül a kritikus hibajavítások települtek az ilyen gépekre.

Őőő ... izé-bizé. A Microsoft nem szokta látogatni az Astalavista-t? :-> A hiper-szuper Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool-t még a megjelenése napján feltörték és az azóta kiadott frissítésekhez is elérhető a "felszabadított" változat. Azt gyanítom, hogy a Vista egekig magasztalt korlátozásait is talán még a hivatalos megjelenése előtt feltörik. Nem tudom miért erőlködik ennyire a Microsoft. Mondhatni az esélytelenek nyugalmával indulhatnak ebben a versenyben. Nem is tudom ... talán a 21. században át kellene gondolniuk az üzletpolitikájukat. Mellesleg nekik sem érdekük a Windows-t teljesen kalóz-biztossá tenni, hiszen bár egy kalóz op.rendszerért nem fizet az ember, de jó eséllyel valamilyen rajta futtatott szoftverért igen. És az MS rengeteg Windows-on futó alkalmazásból lát még pénzt ... hiszen a Windows-ra fejlesztő cégek mind kapcsolatban állnak az MS-sel, fejlesztőket képeznek MCP-vé, stb. Szóval rengeteg nem nyilvánvaló csatornán át keres az MS az operációs rendszerén, nem csak a közvetlen értékesítésből. Sőt! Talán az op.rendszerből befolyó pénz adja a kisebb összeget. Ki tudja ...
