Installing the Boot Camp drivers on a Mac Mini in Windows 7

I installed the Boot Camp v3.1 drivers from a Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVD on a Mac Mini running Windows 7, but after the setup was finished, Device Manager still showed two devices as erroneous: "Performance Counters" and an USB device (which turned out to be the Apple Remote, aka. "Apple IR Receiver"). Repeating the install process did not fix the problem. The solution was to manually install the drivers. Ie. extract the contents of Drivers\Apple\AppleRemoteInstaller.exe (for the Apple Remote) and Drivers\Apple\AppleNullDriver.exe (for the Performance Counters) and update both devices with the respective drivers. This way the driver installations succeeded.

iFixit licensed all their Mac take-apart manuals to the public for free

I've always loved the iFixit guides, they are very detailed and professional. As a Christmas gift, they decided to make all their manuals "free" ... as in freely downloadable (as PDF), shareable, etc. Of course only for non-commercial use. I've already downloaded all guides for my Mac to the disk ... just in case my Mac would survive the iFixit site. Eye-wink

Resetting EFI firmware password on Intel-based Macs

According to the Apple document "Mac OS X Security Configuration For Version 10.4 or Later" you can reset the password if you've physical access to the machine.

Mac startup keys (aka. various boot options)

The post lists all sorts of boot options that you can enable with various keys pressed down while booting. You might also want to check out the article at Apple Support site on "Setting up firmware password protection in Mac OS X". It has no further keys explained, but still contains some valuable piece of information regarding the Mac boot process.

"Mac, PC and Linux machine" ... what's a PC? :-)

It seems some people really think that a PC is equal to a PC running Microsoft Windows. Smiling Eg. in this article they wrote:
If you're interested in connecting the N95 to other devices, the developer has you covered with instructions on how to pair up with a Mac, PC or Linux machine.
Imho "Mac" and "Linux" are operating system families/flavours (each covering a number of operating systems), while a "PC" is a piece of hardware that might run a variety of OSes.

Problems with Mighty Mouse right-clicks

It's a known issue with the Mighty Mouse (at least for first time users) that right-clicks are sometimes mistakenly registered as ordinary left-clicks. You need a couple of hours/days to get used to the way you've to right-click. However recently my mouse went crazy (and did so right after a software installation which made debugging the issue a lot more difficult, because my first suspect was the new software): right-click worked only once in 20 times and I couldn't find a pattern. I've rebooted, removed the new software that I suspected to be guilty of messing up something, but nothing helped.

Finally I turned off the mouse and turned it on again using the switch at the bottom and right-click started to work again as it used to. Smiling

The lesson here is: even if two things happen at the same place and one right after the other, there's not always a cause and effect relationship. Smiling

How to take apart ("deep clean") your Mighty Mouse

Previously I tried to clean my mouse without dismantling it and had more or less success with it. However yesterday the ball stopped to do its job (no scrolling on the screen regardless how hard I tried to roll the ball). This time I decided that more serious measures have to be taken. I've found this page where somebody kindly documented the process of taking apart a Mighty Mouse and included a number of photos as well.

Hardware and Temperature Monitor

I've been using Motherboard Monitor on Windows for years to monitor the temperatures of my PC and automatically shut it down in case of an overheating (eg. if the CPU fan dies). The Temperature Monitor and Hardware Monitor are excellent replacements for the same functionality on my Mac. Smiling
