Law & Order - Memo from the Dark Side

This particular episode is something worth watching, even if you're not a commited fan of the series. It speaks out some truths that were waiting to be spoken for a long time. It's a shame it took so long. Nobody should be permitted to commit war crimes under any circumstances. The threat of terrorist activities cannot be an excuise for applying torture. Not now and not ever. Of course this is an idealistic POV and putting enough stress on men, people start loosing strength and belief in ideals. That is what allowed the creation of all the "legal support" that backed up the hunt for terrorists after recent years' events. How far are people willing to go to keep their safety? What measures are allowed to preempt any attempt of hostile actions against us? Where's the limit? I say the limit -that should be there- was crossed a long time ago. And series like "24" are there to make us believe that doing _whatever_ it takes is the way to go. But it's certainly not. I had been a fan of "24" for quite some time, but gradually I started to see things differently. This episode of "Law & Order" delivered the last piece of confirmation. I'll never again watch "24". Not that it makes any difference for the world, but I hope it makes one for me.

24 showdown?

I bet this is the last season of 24 we'll see. This is the first season where main characters start acting like idiots. Sad Probably the audience is shrinking too. It was a good series though ... sorry that it's going to end badly. Maybe they should have finished it while it was on the top.

Derren Brown - The Heist

In this show Derren Brown shows the basic concepts of brainwashing (although the Wikipedia page does not explicitly mention this phrase, I believe his technique fits the definition). He used various so-called "anchors" (some sort of external stimulus like a sound, smell, touch, etc.) to trigger a previously experienced feeling (or a combination of all the "good" and excited feelings that the subject has experienced before). He also planted criminal thoughts and ideas into the subjects using the same "highly-motivated state" (as he called it in the show). The point was to make some ordinary people commit an armed robbery and 3 of the 4 selected subjects have indeed done it. Read on to see why I disapprove of this "experiment".

October 7th?

It's a little bit odd: on Tuesdays three well known TV series used to be aired ... Eureka, House M.D. and The Mentalist. However this Tuesday all of them were skipped. Shocked Is this some sort of conspiracy of major TV studios Eye-wink or is it due to some event (maybe a national holiday in the US?) that I do not know about?

Sports Night

In the 8th episode of "Sports Night" one of the characters (Dana) said the following to a colleague: For a guy who's read "The Hobbit" fourteen times, you're not so dumb.
I'm quite relieved: this means I've still a couple of times left for reading one of my favourite fantasy books before people start thinking I'm nuts. Eye-wink

Science of Surveillance

There's an episode on National Geographic's Explorer show titled "Science of Surveillance". They said that there're no implantable GPS devices yet. Smiling Do they really think we'd believe that? Sticking out tongue There're already a large number of implantable devices (eg. pacemakers) that can work for years with a lithium battery. Why not a GPS device as well?

Dune vs. today's pain gun?

A few days ago the Daily Mail reported about the newest weapon of crime prevention, the Silent Guardian. The demo version of the weapon looks pretty much the same way as it is described in Frank Herbert's Dune (I mean the box used by the reverend mother together with the Gom jabbar on Paul Atreides). Shocked The functionality is the same, the design too ... is this just a mere coincidence or did the designers of the Silent Guardian take the idea from the novel? Shocked
Anyway ... having a "pain gun" in the hands of police sounds quite troubling. There are already several reports (check YouTube) where cops used tasers to bring down civilists who denied cooperation. Pain guns will be used just the same way ... and not how they were "intended" to be used (as a substitution of deadly force).

Heroes vs. trackers :-o

The first episode of the second season of Heroes was aired just a couple of hours ago and this morning my main torrent trackers are down. I wonder whether this is just a coincidence or maybe people overloaded them with requests to the point where the trackers had to give up? Shocked

Mind Control with Derren Brown

There's a fairly new show on Sci-Fi channel called "Mind Control with Derren Brown". The guy demonstrates psychological "tricks" and shows us how easily you can fool others' brains. To tell the truth, I do not believe all stunts in the show, but around 95% seem to be feasable and even that's a pretty high ratio. Smiling If you liked the movie "Matchstick Men", then you'll love this tv-series too. Eye-wink
