I wanted that by default all external links on my page open in a new window (or tab), but I wanted to have an option to force specific links to open in same window. I also wanted to keep XHTML 1.0 Strict compliancy ... so "target" attribute in the anchor tags was not an option.

Today I've read about TinyMCE (a Javascript based WYSIWYG editor) on drupal.org. I played around with the demo on their website and I'm quite impressed. It's very usable and (according to the news at the Drupal site) very easy to integrate wit Drupal-powered websites.

It's far from trivial how to use Microsoft's Windows Update service if the net is available only through a proxy server. I've done it some times in the past, but forgot the details so I had to go over it again. Now I'll describe the major steps (assuming the OS is Windows XP) so I won't have to rediscover the tricks anew ... and maybe it'll help others too.

It's an interesting concept to move IM clients into browser applications. However I've no problem with separate IM clients and I won't switch over unless Gmail's integrated chat is going to provide all the features (or even more) that I'm used to with my favourite IM client, Miranda.

[Techconnect] The German websites of car maker BMW have been kicked out of the Google index a recent blog pointed out. BMW.de at this time has a PageRank of 0. A search for BMW Germany, which only days ago yielded BMW.de as a top result, now doesn’t show any sign of BMW.de at all. Instead, BMW.com – BMW’s international site – is on top for this search.

Apparently we're not far from the day, when an internet-giant (such as Google) can make something (eg. a company) completely disappear from before the eyes of regular users. I would not even be surprised if somebody/something would get totaly control without us recognizing it. Eg. most people didn't realize how much power Verisign has just until they started to repond to requests for not existing domain names with one of their own IP addresses. I find the amount of control focusing in the hands of a couple of companies quite troubling.

I just found a quite interesting and freely available IP-to-Country database on the net. They've got a handbook with examples for MySQL+PHP on how to use it in a custom application. I think it's pretty interesting to see what countries do visitors of a site come from.

[HWSW] Itt ülök a HWSW előtt és be kell ismernem, elvesztettem az érdeklődésem a részletek iránt, túl gyorsan változik minden, már nem érdekelnek az informatikai apróbb rezzenései, inkább csak a trendek. S ez a lényeg. Ha valakit minden nap látsz, fel sem tűnik hogy meghízott, vagy új frizurája van. Talán ezért van az, hogy szinte senki nem látja, miben is "mesterkedhet" fölöttünk a Google. Az utóbbi időben előszeretettel figyelem őket, ők is engem. Felnőttek, tőzsdére mentek, nap mint nap felvásárolnak valakit, mi meg imádjuk, nap mint nap használjuk, a mindennapjaink részévé tettük őket. Sőt, még a Microsofttól sem félnek. De mit is csinálnak ők? Miért is csinálják? Eme részlet fölött elsiklik mindenki.

Ez a cikk még tavaly májusban jelent meg a HWSW-n. Akkor nem szenteltem neki különösebb figyelmet, most viszont elolvastam és sok pontban egyetértek vele.

I've been browsing the web for some info about XHTML + anchor tags and found an article by Kevin Yank. In his author profile it says: "Kev believes that any good Webmaster should have seen at least one episode of MacGyver". Actually I think everybody should have watched at least one ep. of that TV series. It was (and still is) one of my favorites back in the early 90s.
