I've always loved the iFixit guides, they are very detailed and professional. As a Christmas gift, they decided to make all their manuals "free" ... as in freely downloadable (as PDF), shareable, etc. Of course only for non-commercial use. I've already downloaded all guides for my Mac to the disk ... just in case my Mac would survive the iFixit site.

There're a number of "tool compilatons" that the maintainers package into a bootable CD image (ISO) that you can also write to an USB drive. Here're the best tool sets that I know of:

• Hiren's BootCD (AFAIK this one is not downloadable from the maintainer's page since the ISO contains a number of not perfectly legal progs)
• Ultimate Boot CD
• UBCD4Win (Ultimate Boot CD for Windows)

The first sign of malfunction was that the MBP started to be picky about what sort of blank CDs/DVDs it would accept for writing. This was not a big deal since it still accepted 9 out of 10 CDs without any problems.

Some time later I had a failed burning. The burn process started OK, but near the end (or maybe during writing the lead out?) it failed with some mysterious error message. This was quite strange, but I was still not very suspicious (this is my first Mac and having grown up using PCs with Windows I got used to failures).

However lately I started to have problems even reading my CDs and DVDs. This was the last drop of water in the glass. Every sign pointed to either a broken optical drive or malfunction due to dusty lens. I already had issue with dust on the lens of various CD/DVD drives in the household (eg. the Hi-Fi system and my old PC had problems reading CDs too and a manual cleaning of the lens helped - I tried a lens cleaning kit too, but it was worth nothing).

At work we've got a HP LaserJet 1320n network printer. In its web interface I can set up two printing services: 9100 and LPD. What the hell is this 9100? See screenshot at the right.

This is amazing!

A HWSW cikke szerint akár 50 éves élettartalmú is lehet egy-egy holografikus lemez .... nyamm. Végre nem kell pár évenként újraírni az összes anyagomat ... bár eltart még egy jó darabig, mire a holografikus tárlóeszközök az otthonokba kerülnek.

An article at Apple's support site tells you that an image can "burn in" on your LCD display if it is shown continuously for a longer period of time. This might be scaring at first sight, but the article also describes a method that might help you to recover the LCD from such symptoms. Probably it will not work in all cases, but it's definitely worth a try before you decide to throw away your display.

I hope I'll never have to try anything like this, but it cannot harm to know the options.

Két mag, négy mag, nyolc mag ... "n" mag. Vajon meddig éri meg növelni a hardver-szintű párhuzamosítást? Más kérdés ... mi éri meg jobban: egy nagy számítási kapacitású mag v. "n" mag egyenként "1/n" számítási kapacitással? Érdekes kérdések ezek ... a hardvergyártók se tudják előre a választ, különben az azonos piacra termelő gyártók mind ugyanolyan processzorokat gyártanának.

[TechWeb.com/HWSW] Három New Jerseyben található általános iskolába ha szülő érkezik, hogy felvegye gyermekét, a kapunál egy kamerába kell néznie -- amely lefényképezi az íriszét, és összeveti az adatbázisban található mintákkal, egyezést keresve. A rendszer automatikusan azonosítja a személyeket, és engedi be őket az épületbe.

Roppant biztonságosan hangzik, de én inkább nem szeretnék olyan környéken lakni, ahol ilyen védelemre van szüksége a gyerekeknek. Vajon van még ilyen hely?
