I'm usually online in a number of IM services (Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, Gmail Talk, AIM) by using the
Miranda client. I change my avatars (contant picture) quite rarely so I tend to forget the constraints that these services put on the avatars one can use in their network. I collected the constraints for the avatars in these services here.
Gmail Talk
- Accepted formats: JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG
- Max. size in pixels: 96 x 96
You can upload a picture of any size and you can also crop the image to a square using the same interface in Gmail in the "Settings" section of your profile. The image is then automatically reduced to 96x96 pixels.
Yahoo
- Accepted formats: JPG, GIF
- Max. size in pixels: 400 x 400
You can upload a picture of any size using the Yahoo profile management interface. The image is automatically reduced to fit into a 400x400 pixel square. However this picture is visible only on your profile page and has not much to do with you avatar used in Yahoo's IM-service.
