It's quite annoying that every time I boot up the MacBook Pro it gives this loud startup sound. I can imagine how much my neighbours like it, when I do this after midnight.

Luckily there's already a solution for this:
StartupSound.prefPane. The beta version works also with Intel based Macs. I just wonder why did Apple not put this control into Mac OS X by themselves?
PS: the other trick would be to hold down the mute key (F3 on the MacBook Pro's keyboard) every time I boot the Mac ... however I like the PrefPane solution a lot better.
PS2: another solution is to use
Mac Pilot to "mute startup chime". This is a shareware (15-day trial) application that lets you tweak hundreds of hidden settings. The trial period is more than enough to disable the chime, you can instantly uninstall it afterwards.
