The Unarchiver is a wonderful piece of open source application for the Mac. I use it all the time, because it can handle allmost all sorts of archives I throw at it. However I've found recently that sometimes it fails to extract the contents of large (several GB), multipart RAR archives. It's not a deterministic issue in a sense that for some 4GB archives it works, for some it fails. I've found an
entry in the bug database that describes the very same issue. It seems that the source of the bug is yet to be found, so I checked out
UnRarX which is another free RAR extractor. This one works only with RARs (and PARs), but I do not need any more from it. It extracts all the large RAR archives where Unarchiver fails, and I can still use Unarchiver for all the other, smaller archives.
