During the first boot of the Evo T20 (I mean a boot from a powered down state, ie. with the LED not lighting) the firmware does not care for any key presses during the boot process, it jumps right to the flash-checking and starts the OS from the flash disk. However during reboots (either through software or through pressing the power button on the client) the firmware listens for key presses and does something based on what key you're holding down.
There're three special keys ("q", "p" and "g") and for all others the client powers down. For the three special ones:
- "q": the client starts the Netxfer utility and tries to download a new firmware by looking for a BOOTP server on ports 67+68 and a TFTP server on the port 69.
- "p": the client starts the Netxfer utility and tries to download a new firmware by looking for a BOOTP server on ports 10067+10068 and a TFTP server on the port 10069.
- "g": it is said that this key makes the client do a "factory reset". I don't really know what this means, for me it seems as if the client booted normally (just as if no key was held down). Maybe the client tries to communicate with some server on the LAN using some protocol (just as it does with a BOOTP+TFTP server in the other two special boot modes) and since I don't have such a server set up, it goes on with normal booting. It might be interesting to take a look at the network traffic coming from the client, when using this boot mode.
To trigger these special boot modes, you should hold down the given key right from the start of the boot process (ie. when the power LED turns from green to orange while you're pressing the power button).

Thank you!!!
Special keys during boot of an Evo T20 - g key reset
The G key reset on a Compaq T20 normally running Windows CE will drop the settings.reg file and pull the settings from the factory.reg file (or so I suspect).
I can confirm that the g key reset will bring a T20 back to factory defaults (running CE anyway); it's very useful if you lock down the terminal with single button connect or set it to start with a non-administrator account in locked down state.
Hope this helps
Mike
