Hackers Are People Too

IMDb.com

This a sort of a documentary on what most people believe "hackers" are and what most people calling themselves "hackers" really are like. Smile The term "hacker" has been misused and bullied over the last decades by the media and this movie tries to shed some light on the reality of being a hacker.
Believe it or not: I bet 99% of the people out there have commited some sort of hacking during the course of their lives. Smile

Gardener of Eden

IMDb

This is a movie that could have been even good, but it's not. Especially the ending. The "average Joe" might not get the sarcasm behind the scenes. It's not plain obvious that the actions of the protagonist are immoral and not to be followed. But they are. And in today's angry world a guy might get the wrong idea from the movie. I don't suggest watching it.

Richard Dawkins - The Root of All Evil?

IMDb

"The Root of All Evil?" is a documentary by Richard Dawkins in which he explains why he thinks religion is the worst thing that could ever happen to science and in general to mankind.

I think it's a great programme (it was broadcasted on television on Channel 4 in 2006) and I appriciate the effort Dawkins made to "spread the word". I'm an atheist as well and I share a lot of of Dawkins's point of view regarding religion. However there're some points in his arguing which I disagree with.

The Mist

IMDb

Oh boy. This was something of a movie. Smile Not a Hitchcock horror, but still ... it was pretty exciting. Wink It might be comparable to Signs, but has a bit more to offer "creaturewise". The main plot is not the fight with the monsters, but how people respond to an extreme situation. I bet the human reactions depicted in the movie are quite close to what would happen in real life. Another point goes for the unexpected ending. Or at least I didn't expect it, not from a film made in the American dream factory. A small suggestion: don't take your 10 year old boy to this, he could have bad dreams afterwards.

Apple references in Wall-E

There're quite some references to Apple in Pixar's latest movie Wall-E. The most obvious one (that I'm sure every Mac user spotted) is the Apple Dong that is the boot up sound of Mac OS X (Wall-E makes that sound when he finishes charging his batteries). Here's a blog post on how that came. However there're a lot other tiny details. Here's a probably complete guide if you're interested.

Get Smart

IMDb

Maybe it's just me, but I've found it hilarious. Smile Good gigs and the protagonist was not all nuts. He has talent indeed, even if sometimes a bit clumsy.

Cloverfield

IMDb

The idea is good (nothing groundbreaking, but interesting) and the movie itself is pretty fine too. Til around the first half I thought it's quite realistic. I mean most probably people would react like this if some huge, unknown creature attacked a large city like Manhatten. Eg. people started shooting pictures with their cellulars, when the head of the freedom statue crashed down on the street ... I'm sure it'd happen just like that. Smile However the director (or the producers?) could not resist the temptation to turn the movie into some Godzilla readaptation. Come on ... was that face-to-face shot necessary at the end? It's so unrealistic that a monster -just being bombed- has nothing better to do than attack chopters flying by. Putting this into the film was simply a dumb thing to. And btw. the chopter was flying far too high, the monster must have been a flea in it's previous life to make such a jump. :-> Anyway, I'm not sorry to have seen the movie, it was quite thrilling even despite these small flaws.

Charlie Bartlett

IMDb

This movie is terrific. Laughing out loud The guy playing the leading part was either born for this only one role or he's extremely talented. Smile I hope the latter since he plays Chekov in the upcoming adaptation of Star Trek (which btw. is set to premier May next year). This movie is about a troubled kid who desperately tries to figure out where he belongs in the world and while at it, he also tries to help the other kids with a little advice in their problems. He makes a few mistakes, but eventually Charlie grows up to the challange and turns out to be a born psychologist. I'd say the film was worth watching. Smile

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep

IMDb

It's a nice bedtime story, lovely characters and pretty good CGI for the Loch Ness monster. Smile A story about a family, a mother without her husband, a boy without his father and a tale of a sea monster to make things interesting. It's nicely packed and leaves you with a good feeling afterwards. Has a few gunning scenes which might scare little children, so parentary attendance is advised.
